The historical romantic drama film, The New World (2005), was written and directed by Terrence Malick. It tells the story of Pocahontas, the adventurous daughter of Chief Powhatan, and her tribe’s encounter with three English ships in 1607. Captain John Smith, who had been sentenced to death for mutinous comments on board one of the ships, is pardoned upon arrival ashore by Captain Christopher Newport. Despite an initially promising start, the colony soon faces challenges such as disease, poor discipline, supply shortages and tensions with the local Native Americans – referred to as ‘the naturals’ by Newport. While Newport leaves to fetch supplies from England, Smith takes a small group upriver in search of trade. Unfortunately, he is captured by Native Americans and brought before Chief Powhatan for interrogation.

Although initially facing execution, Pocahontas steps in and spares his life. As a captive among the Native Americans, Smith is treated kindly and gains their trust and friendship. He becomes enamored with their way of life and develops strong feelings for Pocahontas, who is equally intrigued by him. Eventually, the chief agrees to send Smith back to Jamestown once their ships return in the spring. However, upon his arrival, Smith is faced with chaos in the settlement and reluctantly takes on the role of governor. He longs to be reunited with Pocahontas but pushes this thought aside as he faces challenges such as deprivation, death, and the demands of his new position. Despite his yearning, Smith realizes that his time among the Native Americans may have all been just a fleeting memory.
