The American horror film, The Night Flier (1997), is an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story from 1988 with the same title. It follows Richard Dees, a skeptical journalist who lives by the motto ‘Never publish what you believe and never believe what you publish’. His boss at Inside View, Merton Morrison, tasks him with investigating a string of murders at small airports. The killer, known as Dwight Renfield, fancies himself a vampire. At first, Dees declines the assignment and it gets passed on to rookie reporter Katherine Blair. However, after two more killings occur at another airfield with victims drained of blood, Dees changes his mind and takes up the investigation. This decision angers Blair as Morrison gave the story to Dees instead of her. Using his own plane, Dees retraces the path of the mysterious pilot.
Dees conducts his investigation by gathering witness accounts and bribing officials, showing no concern for morality as he seeks to sensationalize the story. He has no qualms about going to extreme lengths, such as desecrating a grave or photographing deceased victims, for the sake of a good photo opportunity or publication. Renfield, who exhibits hypnotic abilities commonly associated with vampires, repeatedly warns Dees to back off from the story as he grows increasingly obsessed with it. This behavior causes tension between Dees and his editor Morrison, who becomes angry when Dees refuses to submit an article until he finishes investigating. In response, Morrison sends Blair to conduct her own parallel investigation.
