The Night Manager (2016)
Susanne Bier’s British television serial, The Night Manager (2016), follows the story of Jonathan Pine, an Englishman working as a night manager in a Cairo hotel. When he becomes entangled with the girlfriend of a local gangster, he discovers information that connects illegal arms sales to wealthy English billionaire Richard Roper. Shortly after, the woman is found dead, prompting Pine to flee for his own safety. Four years later, he encounters Roper at a remote Swiss hotel, reigniting his thirst for revenge. With the help of British Intelligence, Pine is recruited to spy on Roper and sets off a treacherous game of deceit and intrigue.
During the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Jonathan Pine works as the night manager at the Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo. He becomes involved with Sophie Alekan, a mistress of local playboy Freddie Hamid, who comes from a prominent and wealthy family. Sophie entrusts Pine with confidential documents that she wants copied, including a list of weapons and chemical warfare materials, as well as correspondence between the Hamid’s companies and Ironlast Limited. She instructs him to keep them safe and to pass them along to his contacts in case something happens to her. Pine delivers the documents to the International Enforcement Agency in London, where they are then passed on to intelligence officer Angela Burr. Burr has been tirelessly working to bring down arms dealer Richard Roper, but somehow the information is leaked, causing Roper to back out of his deal with the Hamids. When Pine next sees Sophie, she is badly beaten. He takes her to a safe house where they develop a romantic relationship. However, when Pine confronts his contact about the leaked document and demands asylum for Sophie, he is informed that the Hamids have influential connections in England and it would be best for her to return there.
