The American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), directed by Henry Selick and produced and conceived by Tim Burton, takes place in Halloween Town. This world is home to a variety of monsters and creatures related to the holiday (‘This is Halloween’). Jack Skellington, known as the ‘Pumpkin King’, leads the town’s annual Halloween festivities. However, Jack has grown tired of the same routine and longs for something different (‘Jack’s Lament’). While exploring in the woods one morning, he stumbles upon doors leading to other holiday-themed worlds such as Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. When he enters Christmas Town through one of these doors, he becomes enamored with its bright colors and cheerful atmosphere compared to his somber hometown (‘What’s This’).

After Jack’s eye-opening revelation, he eagerly returns home to share his findings with his acquaintances. Although they feel a connection to the leader of Christmas Town, known as Santa Claus (whom Jack mistakenly refers to as ‘Sandy Claws’), they are unfamiliar with the holiday’s traditions and mix them up with their beloved Halloween customs (‘Town Meeting Song’). Jack becomes frustrated and retreats into solitude in his home in order to delve deeper into the concept of Christmas, determined to make sense of it all (‘Jack’s Obsession’). However, after days of intense research and experimentation that yield no answers, Jack decides to let go of his quest for understanding and instead takes matters into his own hands by ‘improving’ the holiday. He declares that Halloween Town will take over Christmas this year and assigns various tasks related to the holiday, such as singing carols and creating gifts (‘Making Christmas’), to different residents.
