The North Water (2021)
Based on Ian McGuire’s 2016 novel, The North Water (2021) is a five-part television miniseries directed by Andrew Haigh and starring Colin Farrell and Jack O’Connell. It is an international co-production between British broadcaster BBC, Canadian broadcaster CBC Television, premium channel Super Channel, and French-language counterpart ICI Radio-Canada Télé. The series premiered in the US on AMC+ on July 15, 2021, followed by premieres in the UK on BBC Two on September 10th and in Canada on Super Channel Fuse a week later on September 19th. It will also be broadcast nationwide in English and French on CBC Television and ICI Radio-Canada Télé respectively, with video-on-demand availability through CBC Gem and ICI TOU.TV.
The setting for the series takes place in 1859, during the final years of the whale oil trade. The story follows a whaling expedition in the Arctic Ocean. Among its crew is Patrick Sumner, the ship’s surgeon who conceals his troubled past as a disgraced military officer. Another member is Henry Drax, the chief harpooner and coxswain, who is notorious for being a violent thug and rapist. Along with depicting whaling, the series also shows the brutal killing of seals and multiple instances of rape and murder aboard the ship. It is eventually revealed that Captain Brownlee has been secretly planning to sink the ship for insurance fraud. However, their plan fails when a rescue ship fails to arrive before winter sets in, leaving them stranded on board. As conditions worsen and the men begin to die off one by one, Sumner must not only endure harsh elements but also face off against the unstable Drax.
