The Northman (2022)
An American historical action film, The Northman (2022), directed and co-written by Robert Eggers and Sjón respectively, portrays the return of King Aurvandill to the fictional island of Hrafnsey in AD 895. Accompanied by his wife, Queen Gudrún, and son, Prince Amleth, father and son partake in a ritual led by Aurvandill’s jester, Heimir. During the ceremony, Heimir reveals to Amleth that his future is predetermined and he must seek revenge for his father’s death rather than face dishonor. The following day, a treacherous coup by Amleth’s uncle Fjölnir results in the beheading of Aurvandill. With Gudrún taken captive, Amleth narrowly escapes with his life. Years later as an adult berserker leading a group of Vikings, Amleth meets a Seeress who declares it Odin’s will for him to seek vengeance on Fjölnir. She advises him to “follow the vixen’s tail” and reveals that his fate is intertwined with that of a Maiden-King.
After hearing of Fjölnir’s downfall and new life as a sheep farmer in Iceland, Amleth disguises himself as a slave and boards a ship. Along the way, he meets Olga, a purported sorceress who is also enslaved. They are eventually taken to Fjölnir’s farm, where Amleth discovers that his mother has married him and given birth to a son named Gunnar. One night, while following a vixen, Amleth encounters a he-witch who connects him with the spirit of Heimir, the man Fjölnir had killed. The he-witch also reveals the existence of Draugr, a powerful sword located at the Gates of Hel. Determined to obtain it, Amleth bravely enters a mound and battles an undead foe known as the Mound Dweller. After successfully obtaining the sword, Amleth carefully conceals it upon his return to the farm. The following day, he is unexpectedly chosen to participate in a game against another nearby farm called knattleikr. However, things quickly turn violent and Gunnar is nearly killed until Amleth steps in to save him.
