The November Man (2014), a spy film, is based on Bill Granger’s novel There Are No Spies from the seventh book in The November Man series, originally published in 1987. In 2008, CIA agent Peter Devereaux leads a mission in Montenegro with young operative David Mason. Despite Devereaux instructing Mason not to fire, he disobeys and ends up taking down an assassin but also causing the death of a child. Five years later, Devereaux has retired in Lausanne, Switzerland when his former boss John Hanley shows up requesting his help in extracting Natalia Ulanova – an aide to Russian President-elect and former Army General Arkady Fedorov. Ulanova steals incriminating photos of Fedorov’s war crimes from his safe and reaches out to the CIA for extraction before escaping. When the FSB starts chasing her through Moscow streets, Devereaux comes to her aid. She gives him Mira Filipova’s name which he passes on to Hanley, who is unaware of Devereaux’s involvement as he coordinates the CIA team.

After receiving the order from station chief Perry Weinstein, Mason carries out the task of killing Ulanova. Despite being fatally wounded, Ulanova manages to pass her phone containing incriminating photos to Devereaux. As the CIA team departs, Devereaux eliminates all members of the squad except for Mason, with whom he has a tense standoff before parting ways without firing any shots. It is later revealed that Devereaux and Ulanova had a previous relationship. Hanley is taken in for questioning while journalist Edgar Simpson enlists refugee worker Alice Fournier’s help in exposing Fedorov’s war crimes. In Belgrade, assassin Alexa learns that Fournier is set to meet with Simpson at a cafe. Devereaux also arrives in Serbia and goes straight to Hanley’s home where he discovers Fournier is the only known person Filipova has contacted. He then goes to the cafe and successfully rescues Fournier from both Alexa and Mason’s team.
