An American psychological sports drama film, The Novice (2021), was written and directed by Lauren Hadaway for her feature directorial debut. After repeatedly taking a physics exam, college freshman Alex Dall becomes determined to join the Wellington College Novice Rowing Program. As she attends her first training session, she becomes fixated on the sport and its consistent form when rowing. Her classmate Jamie Brill also joins the team in hopes of earning an athletic scholarship, quickly gaining recognition as the “best novice” – much to Alex’s frustration. This only intensifies her competitive nature and compulsive behavior. Despite still falling behind Jamie’s performances, Alex manages to improve her rowing times at the expense of her academic success. Soon, they are both promoted to the varsity team.

As Jamie easily adjusts to the new surroundings, Alex struggles to fit in both socially and athletically. She is relegated to sitting at the back of the bus and experiences an embarrassing mishap during a race, causing her to lose her place on the varsity team and her friendship with Jamie. During a joint novice/varsity practice, Alex faints while working out and becomes the target of teasing from her teammates. When Erin, a varsity rower and trainer, outlines the requirements for making the varsity team but expresses reservations about Alex’s size, Alex decides to train intensively on her own. However, Coach Pete notices her extreme dedication and attempts to discourage her from overexerting herself. Eventually, he offers to help her practice using a scull during winter break instead.
