The Old Guard (2020)
The Old Guard (2020), an American superhero film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, follows centuries-old warriors with mysterious healing abilities. These experienced mercenaries, known as Andromache of Scythia (‘Andy’), Booker, Joe, and Nicky, take on various missions to help others. Despite their usual rule of never working for the same employers twice, they make an exception for former CIA operative James Copley’s offer to rescue kidnapped girls in South Sudan. However, they soon discover that the mission was a set-up and are betrayed by Copley’s actions. In another part of the world, U.S. Marine Nile Freeman also experiences a miraculous recovery after having her throat slit during a military operation in Afghanistan.
Later, she confides a disturbing dream to the other immortals. This alerts them to her existence, as they tend to experience dreams of any newly discovered immortals until they are found. Andy quickly tracks down Nile and removes her from Afghanistan before the military can transfer her for further testing. Copley then shares the video of the ambush with pharmaceutical executive Steven Merrick, who sends operatives to capture the team. To keep Nile safe, Andy brings her to a secure location in France where she meets the rest of their group. As they share stories from their pasts, they also reveal that their immortality is not foolproof; eventually, their ability to heal will simply cease without warning – as it did for a previous immortal named Lykon. Nile also learns about Quynh, the first female immortal in Andy’s company. Unfortunately, Quynh was captured and accused of witchcraft before being thrown into the sea in an iron maiden. She has been drowning ever since – continuously and seemingly endlessly.
