The Omen (1976), a supernatural horror film from director Richard Donner and writer David Seltzer, follows American diplomat Robert Thorn and his wife Katherine as they live in Rome. After giving birth to a stillborn child, Katherine is convinced by hospital chaplain Father Spiletto to secretly adopt a newborn whose mother has recently died. Keeping this secret from Katherine, the couple names the baby Damien. Several years later, Robert is now the Ambassador to the United Kingdom and strange occurrences begin to haunt the Thorns: an aggressive Rottweiler appears at their home, Damien’s nanny commits suicide during his fifth birthday celebration, a new nanny named Mrs. Baylock shows up uninvited, Damien violently resists entering a church, and animals at a nearby safari park are visibly disturbed by Damien’s presence.
Father Brennan cautions Robert about Damien’s true nature, alluding to the fact that he is not merely a human child. He urges Robert to receive Holy Communion. Father Brennan reveals that Damien is the son of Satan, and warns Robert that Katherine is expecting a child who will be in grave danger from Damien’s hand. Tragically, Father Brennan meets his demise when he is struck by a lightning rod. Upon learning of her pregnancy, Katherine expresses her desire to terminate it, which Robert opposes. In a horrifying turn of events, Damien causes Katherine to fall from a balcony, resulting in the loss of her unborn child. Photographer Keith Jennings discovers unsettling shadowy figures in his pictures of both the nanny and Father Brennan before they were killed.
