The Other Sister (1999)

The American romantic comedy film, The Other Sister (1999), directed by Garry Marshall, follows the story of Carla Tate. After graduating from a sheltered boarding school, Carla returns to her overprotective and slightly snobby mother Elizabeth’s home. Despite her ambition and mild mental disability, Carla is met with discomfort from Elizabeth as she seems ashamed of her youngest daughter’s condition. This uneasiness is likely due to past experiences of Carla being bullied as a child. Meanwhile, Radley – a dentist and recovering alcoholic – serves as Carla’s father. Determined to gain more independence from her family, Carla sets out to earn a diploma from a polytechnic school. Along the way, she meets another student with a similar disability named Daniel McMahon (known as ‘Danny’) and they soon become friends turned lovers.
Jealous of Danny’s freedom, Carla convinces her parents of her ability to live on her own and moves into her own apartment. Eventually, they begin a sexual relationship. However, Danny’s financial independence is jeopardized when his distant father suddenly stops providing him with money due to his academic struggles. As he begins to realize the high cost of self-sufficiency, Danny turns to alcohol for comfort and seeks advice from his landlord and friend, Ernie, while taking a joyride in an old Ford Mustang convertible. At a holiday party at the local country club, Danny’s anxiety over his situation leads him to overindulge in alcohol in order muster up the courage to profess his love for Carla.
