The Outer Limits (1963–1965), an American TV show, aired on ABC from September 16, 1963 to January 16, 1965 at 7:30 PM Eastern Time every Monday. Often compared to The Twilight Zone, it focused more on science fiction rather than fantasy or supernatural elements. Each episode was a standalone story with surprise endings. During its first season, the show gained a devoted fan base. Some dedicated viewers even brought their TVs with them when they were away so they wouldn’t miss an episode. However, the second season didn’t do as well in ratings after moving to Saturday nights and competing against Jackie Gleason. Producer Joseph Stefano left the show after realizing that competing with the popular Gleason would lead to its cancellation (which happened midway through the second season). Despite this setback, the series continued to have a following long after it ended. Many years later, horror writer Stephen King praised it as one of the best programs of its genre on network TV.
Your television set is functioning correctly. Do not adjust the picture. We have full control of the transmission. If we desire a louder sound, we will raise the volume. For a softer tone, we will reduce it to a whisper. Our capabilities extend beyond just that. We can manipulate the horizontal and vertical aspects as well as alter the image’s movement and focus. So for the next hour, remain in your seat and witness our complete control over what you see and hear. Let us reiterate: Your television set is working perfectly. You are in for an extraordinary journey, an encounter with the mysterious depths of The Outer Limits.
