The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) is an American Western film that takes place during and after the American Civil War. Clint Eastwood both directed and starred in the movie. A Missouri farmer named Josey Wales seeks revenge after his wife and young son are killed by a group of Redlegs, a unit of pro-Union Jayhawker militants under Captain Terrill’s command. After burying his loved ones, Josey practices shooting before joining a Confederate group led by William T. Anderson and participating in attacks against Union supporters and soldiers. As the war comes to an end, Captain Fletcher convinces the guerrillas to surrender after Senator Lane guarantees them amnesty in exchange for their weapons. Despite facing fierce opposition, Wales remains determined and ultimately becomes the sole survivor alongside a young guerrilla named Jamie when Terrill’s Redlegs massacre those who surrender.
After aiding in the defeat of many Redlegs with a Gatling gun, Wales flees with Jamie, who succumbs to his injuries sustained during the attack while helping Josey take down two pursuing bounty hunters. Lane pressures Fletcher to assist Terrill in locating Wales by putting a $5,000 bounty on his head, drawing the attention of Union soldiers and bounty hunters who seek to capture him. Despite initially preferring to travel alone, Wales gathers a diverse group of companions, including an elderly Cherokee man called Lone Watie; Little Moonlight, a young Navajo woman; Sarah Turner from Kansas; and her granddaughter Laura Lee, whom Wales and Little Moonlight rescue from marauding Comancheros along the way.
