The Outsiders (1983)
The Outsiders (1983), an American coming-of-age crime drama film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is based on S. E. Hinton’s 1967 novel of the same name. In 1965 Tulsa, the Curtis brothers’ parents are deceased, leaving eldest brother Darrel to raise and support his two younger brothers, Sodapop and Ponyboy. The ‘Socs’ continually harass and attack Ponyboy until some of his fellow greasers intervene. Later at the drive-in theater, Dallas attempts to flirt with ‘Soc’ Cherry Valance but instead becomes angry and leaves abruptly. Cherry invites Ponyboy and his friend Johnny to sit with her, but their Soc boyfriends become upset and take them away to avoid further conflict. Pony and Johnny make their way to an abandoned lot, as it has become a routine for them to escape from Johnny’s tumultuous household.
He expresses his despair for the unfortunate circumstances of his life, even contemplating taking his own life. After falling asleep for a few hours, Pony wakes up and hurries back home, where Darrel and Soda are waiting for him. An argument ensues between Darrel and Ponyboy, escalating to the point where Darrel violently shoves Ponyboy down. Feeling overwhelmed, Pony runs off with Johnny to a nearby park. As they spend time there, they reminisce about their childhood memories until they are suddenly attacked by Bob and three other Socs. In the midst of the altercation, Johnny is severely beaten while Pony nearly drowns in the park’s fountain. Acting in self-defense, Johnny stabs Bob, causing him permanent injury.
