The Paramedic (2020)

A Spanish psychological thriller, The Paramedic (2020), directed by Carles Torras and written by David Desola and Hèctor Hernández Vicens, follows the story of Ángel Hernández. Living with his girlfriend Vanesa (Vane) François, Ángel is a paramedic who lacks empathy towards his patients and resorts to stealing from them. He then sells these items to a local fence. At home, Ángel displays controlling and possessive behavior towards Vane as they try unsuccessfully for a baby. Blaming her for their struggles, he even suggests her inability to get pregnant may be psychosomatic. After taking a fertility test and discovering low sperm count, Ángel keeps this information from Vane. However, during an ambulance accident that leaves him paralyzed from the waist down, he blames his colleague Ricardo and cannot bring himself to forgive him.
As a result of his disability, Ángel’s relationship with Vane becomes strained. He becomes increasingly paranoid about her fidelity and resorts to belittling, taunting, and manipulating her. Vane works night shifts at a call centre, while Ángel secretly installs spyware on her phone to monitor her activities. One night, he overhears Vane talking with a friend who reveals that Ángel is abusive and that she should leave him. Upon Vane’s return home, Ángel tries to make amends by cooking her favorite meal and apologizing for his behavior. However, their attempt at intimacy fails due to Ángel’s inability to feel anything. While showering, Vane stumbles upon evidence of Ángel’s spying through his laptop. Disgusted and fed up, she decides to leave him for good.
