The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Director Mel Gibson brought the biblical story of The Passion of the Christ (2004) to life. On Passover night in Gethsemane, Jesus prays with his disciples- Peter, James, and John. In this moment, Satan appears and attempts to tempt Jesus. As blood-like sweat drips from Jesus’ body and a serpent emerges from the guise of Satan, Jesus crushes its head as a rebuke. Meanwhile, Judas Iscariot is offered thirty pieces of silver by Caiaphas and the Pharisees to betray Jesus’ identity. He leads temple guards to the forest where he is arrested, resulting in a scuffle that leads to Peter injuring Malchus, the guard commander. In response, Jesus heals Malchus’ wound while chastising Peter before being taken by the guards towards Sanhedrin as his disciples flee.
Upon waking, Mary is immediately aware that something is amiss and seeks counsel from Magdalene. Their conversation is interrupted by John, who bursts into the room to inform them of Jesus’ arrest. They are joined by Peter, who has been following Jesus and his captors. Caiaphas presides over the trial, during which false accusations are hurled at Jesus. Some of the priests who secretly support Jesus are expelled from the proceedings for objecting to the injustice. When Jesus declares himself as the Son of God, an enraged Caiaphas tears his garments and condemns Jesus for blasphemy. As Jesus endures brutal beatings, Peter is confronted by an angry mob and denies being associated with Jesus three times. After cursing them on his third denial, Peter recalls Jesus’ forewarning and weeps bitterly before fleeing.
