The Patriot (2000)
The Patriot (2000) is an American epic movie portraying historical events. Directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Robert Rodat, the film centers around Benjamin Martin during the American Revolutionary War. A veteran of both the French and Indian War and a widower with seven children, Martin is summoned to Charlestown to vote on a levy that would support the Continental Army. Uncertain about war with Great Britain and not wanting to compel others to fight when he himself will not, Martin refrains from voting. However, the levy passes and his eldest son Gabriel enlists against his father’s wishes. Two years later, in 1778, Charlestown falls to the British and Gabriel returns home wounded, carrying important dispatches.
The Martins provide care for both injured British and American soldiers until Colonel William Tavington and his dragoons show up to arrest Gabriel on suspicion of being a spy. In addition to this, they also forcefully conscript former African American slaves who used to work for Benjamin into the British army. Thomas, Gabriel’s brother, attempts to rescue him from the clutches of Tavington. However, in a brutal act, Tavington kills Thomas and orders for the Martins’ home to be set ablaze and all injured American soldiers to be executed. Taking advantage of the British troops’ departure, Benjamin and his two younger sons launch a surprise attack on the convoy transporting Gabriel. With precision and ferocity, Benjamin single-handedly eliminates all but one of the enemy soldiers in front of his children.
