The Peacemaker (1997)
The Peacemaker (1997), an American political action thriller directed by Mimi Leder, marks DreamWorks Pictures’ first film. During an Eastern Orthodox baptism celebration in Pale, Bosnia, the moderate Bosnian Finance Minister, who had been advocating for peace in the Yugoslav Wars, is assassinated. At a missile base located in Kartaly (Chelyabinsk Oblast), Russia, ten nuclear warheads from a SS-18 Satan ICBM are being loaded onto a train headed for a dismantling facility. However, Russian Army General Aleksandr Kodoroff and his rogue Spetznaz unit take control of the train and transfer nine of the warheads to another train. The remaining warhead is then activated and sent on a collision course with a passenger train.
The explosion of the 500-kiloton warhead results in the deaths of thousands of civilians and hinders any immediate investigation into the incident. The explosion garners the US government’s focus. Dr. Julia Kelly, who leads the NSC Nuclear Smuggling Group, suspects Chechen extremists are responsible for it. Military Intelligence Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Devoe, a former US Army Ranger and Special Forces member, interjects during her presentation to propose that the blast was a cover-up for the theft of the warheads. After contacting his acquaintance and Russian counterpart, FSB Colonel Dimitri Vertikoff, Devoe’s hypothesis gains credibility and he is designated as Kelly’s military liaison.
