The American legal thriller film, The Pelican Brief (1993), is an adaptation of John Grisham’s 1992 novel. It was directed by Alan J. Pakula. In the film, two elder Supreme Court justices, Jensen and Rosenberg, are killed by an assassin named Khamel. Tulane University law student Darby Shaw writes a legal brief outlining her theory on the motive behind their murders. Her lover and former clerk of Rosenberg’s, Thomas Callahan, reads the brief and passes it on to Gavin Verheek, special counsel to the director of the FBI. Shortly after, Callahan is killed in a car explosion while Darby narrowly escapes unscathed. Realizing the accuracy of her brief, Darby goes into hiding and reaches out to Verheek for help. An informant known as Garcia contacts reporter Gray Grantham from the Washington Herald about the assassinations but then vanishes.

Darby also manages to get in touch with Grantham. Meanwhile, a friend informs Darby that her computer equipment and documents have disappeared from her home. Darby narrowly escapes an attack at her hotel hideout, only to find herself in another perilous situation when she arranges to meet Verheek. However, things take a deadly turn when Khamel kills and impersonates Verheek at their meeting. Before Khamel can harm Darby, a mysterious person intervenes and fatally shoots him in a bustling public square. Later, while meeting with Grantham in New York City, Darby reveals her belief that oil tycoon Victor Mattiece orchestrated the assassinations for his own gain. According to her theory, Mattiece plans to drill for oil beneath a Louisiana marshland that is home to an endangered species of brown pelicans.
