The Perfect Storm (2000)
The Perfect Storm (2000), an American disaster drama film directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is based on the 1997 creative non-fiction book of the same name by Sebastian Junger. In October 1991, the commercial swordfishing boat Andrea Gail returns to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts with a poor catch. Boat owner Bob Brown mocks Captain Billy Tyne for his ‘cold streak’. Determined to prove himself, Billy convinces the crew to join him for one final late-season fishing trip. They venture out beyond their usual grounds on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, leaving behind an approaching tropical storm. Despite starting off unsuccessful, they eventually find luck at the Flemish Cap.
However, their ice machine breaks down and they must rush back to shore before their catch spoils in order to sell it. Between Andrea Gail and Gloucester lies a convergence of powerful weather patterns, including a hurricane that the crew underestimated. As they bravely face the turbulent sea, a fierce wind snaps the ship’s radio antenna just as Hurricane Grace and the northern front unite above them. Despite rookie fisherman Bobby Shatford’s attempts to repair it, the antenna is lost into the sky. In response, Captain Linda Greenlaw of the sister ship Hannah Boden issues a Mayday Relay for Andrea Gail. A rescue helicopter from the New York Air National Guard, an HH-60 Pave Hawk, is dispatched but is forced to abort their mission after failing to refuel midair with an HC-130 Hercules.
