The Pick-up Artist (1987)
The American romantic comedy drama film, The Pick-up Artist (1987), was produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It was written and directed by James Toback. Jack Jericho, a 21-year-old womanizer, constantly refines his craft. Driving around the city in a red convertible, he smoothly charms women wherever he goes. Unfortunately, this behavior doesn’t sit well with the principal at his school who reprimands him for hitting on students’ mothers. One night while out and about, Jack approaches Lulu as she waits in her mobster boyfriend Alonzo’s convertible. As Alonzo approaches and threatens him, Jack quickly retreats inside. Meanwhile, mobster Fernando has his sights set on Randy, a young redhead inside the bar who is catching the attention of many – including Jack.
Lulu trails behind Randy into the restroom, pleading with her to give Fernando a chance. However, Randy stays adamant and reminds Lulu that she should not be mediating on his behalf. As they exit, Lulu gets into a heated argument with Alonzo and ultimately finds herself abandoned there. But Jack happens to witness this unfortunate situation and kindly offers her a ride. Soon after, their romantic moment is disrupted by an unexpected interruption from a police officer. The following day, Jack assists his grandmother with her insulin at home before heading back out. As he leaves, the landlord brings up the overdue rent. To Jack’s surprise, he runs into Randy on the street and she agrees to have a fling in his car, but refuses to exchange numbers.
