The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
The film The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), directed by Derek Cianfrance and written by Cianfrance, Ben Coccio, and Darius Marder from a story by Cianfrance and Coccio follows the journey of Luke Glanton, a motorcycle stuntman with a traveling carnival. In Schenectady, he reconnects with his former lover Romina Gutierrez, who is now in a relationship with Kofi Kancam. To his surprise, Luke learns that he is the father of Romina’s baby Jason. He leaves the carnival to be closer to his son and takes on part-time work at Robin Van Der Hook’s auto shop. When Luke asks for more work, Robin reveals his past as a bank robber and suggests they work together. With Luke robbing the banks at gunpoint and making his escape on his motorcycle into a box truck driven by Robin.
Luke and Romina engage in sexual activity in his trailer. Afterwards, he spends time with her and their son, Jason. Later on, he enters Romina and Kofi’s house without permission and tries to put together a crib for Jason. When Kofi insists Luke leaves, things take a violent turn as Luke hits him with a wrench and is subsequently arrested. Robin comes to his aid by bailing him out of jail. During their conversation, Luke expresses his desire to provide for his son’s future. However, Robin refuses to continue participating in their criminal activities, causing a rift between them. In retaliation, Luke steals from Robin and buys himself a new motorcycle using the stolen money. During an unsuccessful bank robbery attempt, Luke ends up being chased on foot by police officers.
