The Player (1992)

The Player (1992), an American satirical black comedy mystery film directed by Robert Altman and written by Michael Tolkin, is based on Tolkin’s own novel of the same name. It follows Griffin Mill, a Hollywood studio executive dating story editor Bonnie Sherow. In his role, Mill listens to pitches from screenwriters and decides which ones have the potential to be turned into films. However, out of 50,000 submissions yearly, he only green-lights twelve. When ambitious exec Larry Levy joins the studio, Mill’s job is at risk. Adding to his troubles are threatening postcards from a rejected screenwriter – suspected to be David Kahane. After learning that Kahane is at a screening of The Bicycle Thief in Pasadena’s Rialto Theater, Mill offers him a scriptwriting deal as a way to appease him.
Kahane and Mill head to a nearby bar, where Kahane becomes increasingly intoxicated and refuses Mill’s offer with insults and taunts about his job security at the studio. Eventually, their disagreement escalates into a physical fight in the bar’s parking lot. In a fit of rage, Mill drowns Kahane in a shallow pool while shouting ‘Keep it to yourself!’ He then tries to cover up the crime by making it look like a failed robbery. The next day, while struggling to focus during a meeting, Mill is confronted by studio security chief Walter Stuckel who informs him that the police suspect him as the last person to see Kahane alive. Adding to his troubles, Mill receives a fax from his persistent stalker. It becomes clear that he has mistakenly killed someone else and the stalker may be aware of this.
