The Pledge (2001)
The American neo-noir psychological mystery drama film, The Pledge (2001), directed by Sean Penn, follows the story of Jerry Black, an aging Reno detective. On the night of his retirement party hosted by his department, Captain Pollack presents Jerry with tickets for a fishing trip in Mexico. However, their celebration is abruptly cut short when a murdered child, Ginny Larsen, is discovered. Jerry and Detective Stan Krolak quickly head to the crime scene. After breaking the tragic news to Ginny’s parents, Margaret Larsen makes Jerry promise on a cross made by their daughter that he will catch the killer. The next day, a suspect named Toby Jay Wadenah is found – a Native American man with an intellectual disability. Exploiting Toby’s condition to his advantage, Stan manipulates him into confessing to Ginny’s murder.
After the autopsy on Ginny confirms her consumption of chocolate prior to her death, wrappers discovered in Toby’s truck solidify his role as the likely killer of the little girl. Despite Jerry’s lingering suspicions, the case is officially closed. However, Jerry remains committed to fulfilling his promise to uncover the truth and chooses to forego his trip to Mexico, ultimately missing his flight. Instead, he seeks solace in visiting Ginny’s grandmother, Annalise Hansen. As they reminisce about their shared love for reading, Annalise shares with Jerry a poignant tale about an angel who guides deceased children on a final journey over all the places they treasured before ascending to Heaven. Continuing his quest for closure, Jerry also visits one of Ginny’s close friends, Becky Fiske.
