The film adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved children’s book, The Polar Express (2004), was directed by Robert Zemeckis and co-written by William Broyles Jr. On Christmas Eve, a passenger train called the Polar Express stops outside a young boy’s house. Feeling doubtful about Santa Claus, the boy boards the train after being invited by the conductor. He meets two other children on board – a spirited girl and a know-it-all boy. The conductor then stops to pick up another boy named Billy, who initially refuses to join but eventually changes his mind. Despite causing some trouble with the emergency brake, Billy is allowed on board and chooses to sit alone in the observation car. As the children are served hot chocolate by dancing waiters, the girl saves a cup for Billy.

As the conductor and girl approach Billy with his cup, the boy notices that her ticket hasn’t been validated yet. He attempts to return it to her, but a gust of wind snatches it and sends it flying into the wilderness. However, luckily, the ticket finds its way back onto the train. Unfortunately, when the girl realizes her ticket is missing, she must accompany the conductor to resolve the issue. Fearing she will be kicked off the train, the boy takes it upon himself to retrieve her ticket and search for her. Along his journey across rooftops, he is aided by a mysterious spectral hobo who helps him reach the engine. When he finally locates the girl, she has been put in charge of the train while repairs are being made to its headlight. With quick thinking, the boy applies the brakes just in time to avoid a herd of caribou obstructing their path.
