The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
The American disaster film, The Poseidon Adventure (1972), directed by Ronald Neame, follows the journey of the SS Poseidon, an ocean liner headed from New York to Athens in the Aegean Sea. Despite Captain Harrison’s concerns about safety, the new owner’s representative insists on traveling at full speed to cut costs, resulting in Poseidon being unable to take on ballast. Also onboard are Reverend Frank Scott, who believes in self-help and is being sent to Africa as punishment for his unorthodox views; Detective Lieutenant Mike Rogo and his wife Linda, who struggles with seasickness; siblings Susan Shelby and Robin en route to see their parents; and retired Jewish couple Manny and Belle Rosen heading to Israel to meet their grandson for the first time. Curious about the ship’s mechanics, Robin can often be found in the engine room.
James Martin, the love-shy and health-conscious haberdasher, was among the passengers on the ship’s New Year’s celebration. As everyone gathered in the dining room, Nonnie Parry, the ship’s singer, rehearsed for her performance. However, just moments after midnight, a report of an undersea earthquake called the captain to the bridge. With concern in his voice, he received word that a tsunami was approaching from Crete. Acting quickly, he issued a distress signal before the ship was hit broadside and capsized, now floating upside-down. The only way to safety was ‘upwards’ towards the outer hull that was now above water. As survivors took stock of their predicament in the dining room, Scott suggested traveling with him to the 1 inch thick hull.
