Set in a post-apocalyptic world in 2013, an unidentified nomad roams the scattered communities of the Utah flatlands, trading performances of long-forgotten Shakespearean plays for food and water. After being held at gunpoint by the Holnists, a neo-feudalist militia, the nomad is forcefully recruited into their ranks and marked with their emblem, a figure 8, on his shoulder. Led by General Bethlehem, the Holnists hold control over the region and demand tribute and new members from local towns. When the nomad manages to escape, he finds refuge in an abandoned mail truck once owned by a deceased postman.
Sporting his postman attire and carrying a mail bag, he arrives in Pineview proclaiming to be a representative of the newly-revived U.S. government. With a letter addressed to resident Irene March in hand, he persuades Sheriff Briscoe to grant him entry into the settlement. The postman’s arrival sparks excitement in teenager Ford Lincoln Mercury, who eagerly seeks to join the postal service and assists in reopening the abandoned post office. He also crosses paths with married couple Abby and Michael, fulfilling their request for reproductive assistance. Before departing for Benning, he collects a stack of mail left at the post office by locals. Meanwhile, General Bethlehem catches wind of the postman’s tales about a reinstated government in Minneapolis and fears losing his control if news spreads.
