The Power of One (1992) is a drama directed and edited by John G. Avildsen. It is loosely based on Bryce Courtenay’s book with the same name, published in 1989. The story revolves around Peter Philip Kennith Keith (also known as ‘PK’), born in 1930 on a South African homestead to an Englishwoman who had recently lost her husband. PK received dual education – from his mother in England’s ways and from a Zulu nanny whose son Tonderai was his closest friend. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when the farm’s cattle succumb to rinderpest. As a result, PK’s mother suffers a nervous breakdown and he is sent to an Afrikaans boarding school until she recovers. Being the sole English student there, PK faces severe bullying from his Afrikaner classmates, especially Jaapie Botha – the oldest student who holds particular contempt towards him.

This constant torment includes being spat at and urinated on by Jaapie and others, leading PK to develop bed-wetting issues which he ultimately overcomes with the help of local sangoma Dabula Manzi. Whilst overcoming his nightmares, PK is gifted a chicken, lovingly named Mother Courage. Soon after, amidst the sudden onset of war in Europe, PK and Mother Courage are taken by Afrikaner students who put them on trial in a pretend Nazi court. Here, Botha expresses his intense animosity towards the British for their actions during the Second Boer War. Tragically, the boys hang Mother Courage and Jaapie kills her with a slingshot. In response to this cruelty, PK physically defends himself against Botha and as a result, they try to execute him in a similar fashion.
