The Power of the Dog (2021)
Jane Campion’s film, The Power of the Dog (2021), is a reimagined Western drama based on Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name. Set in 1925 Montana, the story follows wealthy rancher brothers Phil and George Burbank as they encounter Rose Gordon, a widow and innkeeper, during a cattle drive. While George is drawn to Rose’s kindness, Phil disapproves of her and views her as someone after his brother’s money. He also belittles Rose’s teenage son Peter, whom he sees as weak and effeminate. After George and Rose marry and she moves in with them on the ranch, Peter goes off to medical school. Wanting to impress his parents and the governor, George pressures Rose into playing piano at a dinner party. During the performance, it is revealed that Phil was actually a brilliant Classics student at Yale, despite his rough demeanor. However, Phil’s earlier demeaning comments prevent Rose from completing her recital.
After being humiliated and upset by Phil’s behavior, Rose turns to alcohol and eventually becomes an alcoholic while Peter is home from school on break. Phil and his friends continue to mock Peter, causing him to retreat to his room where he occupies himself by dissecting a rabbit that he caught. In a nearby glade, known as Bronco Henry’s territory, Peter sets up a campsite and stumbles upon a collection of nude men magazines. He witnesses Phil wearing Bronco’s scarf while bathing in a nearby pond, before being chased away. Later, in front of his peers and family members Rose and George, Phil apologizes to Peter and even offers to use rawhide to make him a lasso. He also takes time to teach him how to ride a horse. One day, when he is alone, Peter discovers a deceased cow and carefully puts on surgical gloves that he had brought in his backpack.
