The Preacher's Wife (1996)
The American Christmas comedy-drama film, The Preacher’s Wife (1996), directed by Penny Marshall, tells the story of Reverend Henry Biggs and his struggles as the pastor of a small African American Baptist church in a poverty-stricken area of New York City. With declining membership, financial issues, and constant demands from his parishioners, Henry is feeling overwhelmed. To make matters worse, real estate developer Joe Hamilton is pressuring him to sell the church’s property for luxury condos. As a result, Henry has become neglectful towards his wife Julia and their son Jeremiah. Julia fears that their marriage is falling apart. Uncertain of his ability to impact his congregation and starting to doubt his beliefs, Henry prays for divine intervention.
His call is answered by the arrival of Dudley, a suave and clever angel, who informs Henry that he is there to assist him on behalf of God. Despite Dudley’s explanation, Henry remains wary of his intentions. On the other hand, Julia is immediately taken with the charming and composed angel. As Christmas draws near, Henry’s responsibilities pile up, causing Dudley to spend more time with Julia and Jeremiah. This change in routine prompts Beverly, Henry’s secretary, to react humorously in a defensive and hostile manner as she fears Dudley may replace her. Similarly, Julia’s sharp-tongued mother Margueritte also doubts Dudley’s sincerity as she fears he will ruin her daughter’s marriage.
