The Prestige (2006) is a psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan. This film is based on a novel by Christopher Priest that was published in 1995. Set in 1890s London, it follows two shills for a magician named Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, who are both mentored by John Cutter, an engineer responsible for designing stage magic tricks. During one performance involving a water tank, Angier’s wife Julia tragically drowns while attempting to escape. In his grief, Angier blames Borden for her death and their relationship turns hostile. As they part ways, Borden starts his own solo act while Cutter aids Angier in launching his own career. Seeking revenge for his wife’s passing, Angier ruins Borden’s bullet catch trick by shooting off two of his fingers. In return, Borden sabotages one of Angier’s shows and later unveils his own highly acclaimed trick known as ‘The Transported Man’, where he appears to instantly travel between two wardrobes placed on opposite ends of the stage.

The fake trick is a major achievement, but Angier is unhappy as he remains hidden under the stage while Root receives all the praise. Borden later reveals that he has significant control over Angier, causing him to act increasingly arrogant. In response, Angier enlists his assistant Olivia to spy on Borden in order to learn how he performs The Transported Man. However, Olivia ends up falling in love with Borden and becomes his assistant instead. Together, they work to undermine Angier’s act and ultimately leave him crippled. When confronted by Angier, Olivia gives him a copy of Borden’s encrypted diary. In order to decode it, Angier threatens to harm Borden’s stage engineer, Fallon, until he obtains the keyword ‘TESLA’. This leads Angier on a journey to America where he meets scientist Nikola Tesla, who is said to have built a machine for The Transported Man trick.
