The Prince of the Pacific (2000)
The film, The Prince of the Pacific (2000), takes place on the island of Fenua Poerava, also known as ‘Pearl Island’, during the year 1918. A French military ship arrives with Captain Alfred de Morsac, a decorated soldier who has been awarded the Croix de Guerre. He has come to create a battalion of Ocean Skirmishers. Morsac embodies the bravery and resilience of a true hero, surviving for twelve days on nothing but a seagull carcass. His unwavering courage and sense of duty often lead him into reckless situations, though he remains immune to ridicule. Upon reaching the island, he encounters the Hiva people, ancient warriors under the oppressive rule of Commander Lefebvre, a despicable and greedy man.
Morsac, a man determined to fulfill an ancient prophecy and free the people of a Tahitian island from oppression, wins the friendship of Reia, the young prince. However, Moeata, Reia’s French mother, sees Morsac as nothing more than a ‘rotten dog’ from Europe. Despite this obstacle, Morsac finds himself forced to flee with Barnabé, a criminal with a kind heart but malicious intentions. After serving twenty years in prison, their chaotic escape unexpectedly leads them on a perilous journey that will ultimately define their fate. This fast-paced adventure explores themes of human greed, political vanity, and the power of dreams.
