Captain Alfred de Morsac landed in 1918 with his military ship on an imaginary island called Fenua Poerava (“black pearl island” in Tahitian), a paradise lost in the Polynesian archipelago. He was decorated with the Croix de Guerre, and came to form a battalion of Oceanian skirmishers to reinforce the troops in Verdun. But the inhabitants, the Hiva, under the thumb of the ignoble and greedy Commander Lefebvre, will quickly drive out the French officer, who brings with him Barnabé, a crook with a tender heart. Morsac, however, befriended a child, Reia, the prince of the island. The latter sees in him the liberator of his people. Nevertheless, Reia’s mother, Moeata, French by origin, living in a Polynesian dress and barefoot, is wary of this Morsac.
