The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009)
Rebecca Miller’s film, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009), follows the tumultuous life of its titular character. Growing up as the youngest and only girl in a large Christian family, Pippa’s childhood was overshadowed by her neurotic mother Suky’s obsessive focus on her appearance. As a teenager, Pippa learns that her mother self-medicates with amphetamines to cope with intense mood swings. Seeking refuge from her dysfunctional family, she moves in with her aunt Trish and her partner Kat, who live in a lesbian menage. However, when Trish discovers Pippa’s involvement in erotic photo shoots with Kat and friends, she is kicked out and begins a bohemian lifestyle fueled by drugs and work as an exotic dancer.
During a weekend getaway with her like-minded friends, Pippa crosses paths with Herb Lee, an older and charming publisher. Despite his marital status, the two develop a romance. However, before Herb’s wife will grant him a divorce, she invites Pippa and Herb to have lunch together. In an unexpected turn of events, she pulls out a gun and points it at Pippa. Despite this adversity, Pippa and Herb decide to get married and eventually have two children together. As they enter retirement in Connecticut, Pippa becomes the ultimate ‘perfect wife’ – always loving and supportive of those around her but neglecting her own needs. Over time, their marriage begins to deteriorate as Herb has an affair with one of Pippa’s friends while middle-aged Pippa finds solace in the company of Chris who is 35 years old.
