The Professor (2018)
The Professor (2018) follows the story of Richard Brown, an English professor at a New England college. During a visit to his doctor, he receives devastating news of advanced stage 4 lung cancer that has spread throughout his body and is terminal. Given a life expectancy of six months without treatment, Richard’s hope is renewed when the doctor suggests that cancer treatment could potentially extend it to 12-18 months. After taking a walk through town and into a pond in shock, Richard returns home for dinner where he plans to share the somber news with his wife, Veronica, and their daughter Olivia. However, Richard’s plans are interrupted by Olivia’s announcement that she is a lesbian. While initially relieved that it wasn’t something worse, Veronica dismisses her daughter’s revelation as just a phase and this causes Olivia to storm out. In the midst of this chaos, Veronica reveals to Richard that she is having an affair with Henry Wright, the dean of the college where he teaches. Feeling betrayed and hurt by her actions, Richard lashes out and accuses her of having no taste.
Veronica inquires about his initial thought, and he expresses concern that the steaks may have been overcooked. The following day, Richard begins to remove students who do not show a genuine interest in English and reading. He offers a C grade to those who choose to leave the class, believing it is of no value to them. Instead, he suggests they each read a book and present a lesson on its significance. Those who are not interested can simply walk out and still receive a C grade. As a result, Richard is left with a small group of dedicated students. Before exiting, he informs them that he plans to go on a 72-hour bender and invites anyone who knows where to obtain marijuana to come see him in his office. Later at home, Richard and his wife discuss living their lives however they please but discreetly for the sake of their daughter. Veronica asks to try some of his medication, mistakenly thinking it is recreational rather than for cancer treatment.
