The Promise (2016)

The Promise (2016) is an American epic historical war drama film directed by Terry George, co-written by Robin Swicord. It follows the story of Mikael, a young Armenian with aspirations to study medicine. While in Constantinople pursuing his dream, he meets Ana, another Armenian who captures his heart. However, she is involved with an American photographer named Chris who has been sent to document the Turkish genocide of the Armenians. Amidst the atrocities of war, a love triangle develops. Mikael, a pharmacist from the village Sirun in the Ottoman Empire’s southeast region, had promised himself to a wealthy neighbor’s daughter as a means of financing his education. In exchange for this marriage arrangement, he received a dowry of 400 gold coins.
As a result, he is able to journey to Constantinople and enroll in the Imperial Medical Academy. During his time there, he becomes close friends with Emre, the son of a prominent Turkish official. With the assistance of his wealthy uncle, Mikael is introduced to Ana, an Armenian woman who was raised in Paris and is romantically involved with American journalist Chris Myers from the Associated Press. As tensions escalate due to the outbreak of World War I, Mikael falls deeply in love with Ana. Thankfully, thanks to Emre’s help and Mikael’s status as a medical student, he is temporarily exempt from being drafted into the Ottoman army. However, when he bravely tries to save his uncle from imprisonment during the April 24th roundups, he himself ends up being detained and sent to a labor camp.
