The Proposal (2009)
The Proposal (2009) is an American romantic comedy film directed by Anne Fletcher and written by Peter Chiarelli. It follows the story of Margaret Tate, an abrasive Canadian editor-in-chief at a New York City book publishing company who finds out that her visa renewal has been denied due to violation of her term. In order to avoid deportation, she convinces her personal assistant Andrew Paxton to marry her so she can obtain a green card. She reminds Andrew that if she gets deported, it would mean losing years of his work as her assistant and hindering his dream of becoming an editor. However, U.S. immigration agent Gilbertson is suspicious and warns them about the consequences of committing fraud – permanent deportation for Margaret and felony charges with a $250,000 fine and five years in prison for Andrew.
Due to the high stakes involved, Andrew is adamant that Margaret must agree to his conditions of becoming an editor and publishing a book he suggested, if they decide to marry. After Margaret agrees, they make a trip to Andrew’s hometown of Sitka, Alaska to visit his parents Joe, Grace, and his grandmother Annie. Although they know about the relationship between Andrew and Margaret, his family is unaware of their engagement. On their way to the family home, Margaret is taken aback when she learns about the Paxtons’ considerable wealth. At a welcome party thrown by the Paxtons, Margaret meets Ramone, an enthusiastic waiter while Andrew’s father confronts him. Joe doubts Andrew’s love for Margaret and believes he is using her solely for career advancement. Enraged by his father’s mistrust, Andrew immediately announces their engagement.
