The Protégé (2021), an American action thriller film directed by Martin Campbell with a screenplay by Richard Wenk, follows the story of Anna, an assassin who was taken in and trained by Moody after he rescued her from a violent ordeal in Da Nang. Together, they traveled the world and completed high-profile contracts before settling down in England. While Anna runs a rare-book store, Moody resides in a grand manor house. On one fateful day, Rembrandt walks into Anna’s shop under the guise of buying a gift. In present times, Anna and Moody collaborate to take down a Romanian mafia boss by using his son as bait. As they celebrate Moody’s birthday, he shares information with Anna about someone he is tracking down. However, things take a dark turn when all of Anna’s contacts related to their mission are murdered and her store is attacked. Fueled by revenge, she suspects Edward Hayes, an old target from Moody’s past during the Vietnam War, to be linked to the killings and the person Moody was seeking information on.

During her time there, she discovers that the individual Moody was seeking is the son of Edward Hayes. Despite his mental disability, the son receives adequate care in a well-funded facility thanks to a generous contributor. Anna also becomes aware of Vohl, Edward Hayes’ business partner who took over the company following Hayes’ passing. She arranges a meeting with Vohl, but Duquet, Vohl’s attorney, murders him in order to prevent any information from being revealed to Anna. In retaliation, Anna attacks Duquet and is apprehended after a pursuit. Duquet proceeds to torture her in an attempt to uncover her motives for pursuing Edward’s son. Meanwhile, Rembrandt comes to visit Anna in her cell and reveals that he too works for their mutual employer. However, he assures her that his tactics differ from those of Duquet and denies any involvement in the shooting at the library.
