The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)

The American fantasy romantic comedy film, The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), was written and directed by Woody Allen. Set in 1935 during the Great Depression, Cecilia, a waitress from New Jersey, faces challenges in her job and marriage to her unfaithful husband Monk. Despite her struggle to leave him, she finds solace by watching the same movie repeatedly at the theater. Her focus shifts towards Tom Baxter, an archaeologist character in the film who falls for a Copacabana singer. As Baxter notices Cecilia’s gaze on him, he becomes smitten with her and breaks out of the screen to be with her. This unexpected turn causes chaos among the other sentient characters in the film. As Cecilia and Baxter spend an evening together, the rest of the characters refuse to continue their scenes without him.
The theater manager contacts the producer of the film and informs Gil Shepherd, the actor who plays Baxter’s role. He arrives in town to resolve the situation. Shepherd runs into Cecilia and enlists her help to find Baxter, who is refusing to return to the film due to rebels popping up in various screenings. Monk catches wind of Cecilia and Baxter’s escapades and confronts them. In a fair fight, Baxter defeats Monk, but then gets blindsided by him. Disgusted with his actions, Cecilia refuses to accompany Monk. Meanwhile, a prostitute accosts Baxter and takes him to a brothel, but he remains faithful to Cecilia. Shepherd tries his charms on Cecilia and even gives her a kiss, but she chooses Baxter instead. As the Purple Rose producers plan to dispose of all copies of the film once Baxter returns, he and Cecilia become engaged while inside the theater together.
