Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), an American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, follows three interconnected stories over the course of two eventful years. The backdrop for these tales is a series of Thanksgiving gatherings hosted by Hannah and her husband, Elliot, at The Langham. As the central figure in the narrative, Hannah’s presence ties together most events in the film. However, Elliot strays from their stable marriage when he becomes infatuated with Lee, one of Hannah’s sisters. His reasons for doing so are rooted in his dissatisfaction with his wife’s independence and emotional strength. Meanwhile, Lee has been living with a much older artist named Frederick for five years but now finds their relationship lacking in both intellectual and sexual stimulation.
After confessing to her involvement with Elliot, Lee leaves Frederick. Despite his marriage to Hannah, Elliot and Lee continue their affair between the two Thanksgiving gatherings. However, at the second Thanksgiving, Lee decides to end things with Elliot, stating that she is tired of waiting for him to leave his wife and has started seeing someone else. Although Hannah’s ex-husband Mickey, a television writer, appears mainly in scenes apart from the main story, flashbacks reveal that their marriage ended due to his infertility preventing them from having children. They did have twin children together who were not biologically his before they divorced. Additionally, after their divorce, Mickey went on a disastrous date with Hannah’s sister Holly when they were set up by others.
