The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
The American biographical drama film, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), directed by Gabriele Muccino, follows the story of Chris Gardner. In 1981, Gardner, a San Francisco salesman, puts all his savings into portable bone-density scanners. He promotes them to doctors and touts their convenience over regular X-rays. These scanners become a key factor in Gardner’s life. Despite being successful in selling most of them, the delay in receiving payments causes tension with his wife Linda, who also works as a hotel maid. As their financial struggles increase, so does the strain on their marriage, even with their young son Christopher Jr. to care for. During one sales pitch, Gardner crosses paths with Jay Twistle from Dean Witter Reynolds and impresses him by solving a Rubik’s Cube during a taxi ride.
After Jay departs, Chris is unable to afford the fare and decides to flee instead. This causes the driver to angrily pursue him into a BART station. During his escape, Chris loses one of his scanners but manages to board a train. Fortunately, Chris’s newfound connection with Jay leads to an opportunity for an interview as an intern stockbroker. However, the day before the interview, Chris reluctantly agrees to paint his apartment in order to delay being evicted due to financial struggles. While working on this task, Chris is approached by two policemen at his doorstep who inform him that he must pay for numerous parking tickets he has accumulated. As part of his punishment, Chris is instructed to spend the night in jail which adds further complications to his already busy schedule for the upcoming interview.
