The Quick and the Dead (1995)
The American Western movie, The Quick and the Dead (1995), was directed by Sam Raimi. It takes place in Redemption, a town in the Old West, where the notorious outlaw-turned-mayor John Herod reigns supreme. He has declared a single-elimination shooting tournament with specific rules: any contestant can challenge another, no challenges can be declined, each player must fight once daily, and a match ends when one person yields or dies. The Lady, a skilled gunslinger, enters the competition solely for the large cash prize. While sign-ups are underway, Herod’s henchmen appear with Cort, an ex-member of their gang known for his exceptional gunfighting abilities.
Cort has left behind violence and now preaches, refusing to take part in the tournament. However, Herod’s men try to hang him, but The Lady steps in and shoots through the rope, setting him free. Along the way, she meets a bold young man known as ‘The Kid’, who believes he is Herod’s son and hopes to earn his father’s respect by winning the tournament. The next morning, The Lady wakes up alone in The Kid’s bed and notices barrels of dynamite underneath it. In the initial round, all three – Herod, The Kid, and The Lady – easily defeat their competitors. As a token of his appreciation, Herod presents Cort with a poor quality gun and declares that he can only have one bullet at a time so he cannot escape town by force.
