The Raid (2011) is a fast-paced film, written, directed and edited by Gareth Evans. Rama, a rookie member of the Mobile Brigade Corps, joins Sergeant Jaka and Lieutenant Wahyu’s team of 20 men for a mission to capture notorious crime boss Tama Riyadi. This powerful leader runs an apartment block with the help of his lieutenants Andi and Mad Dog, who allow criminals and addicts to reside there under their protection. The team successfully infiltrates the building without detection and begins their search on the first floor, where they encounter and subdue various tenants. Among them is Gofar, a law-abiding resident delivering medicine to his sick wife. As they make their way to the sixth floor, they are spotted by two young lookouts. One is shot while the other raises alarm, alerting Tama. He quickly calls for reinforcements – including snipers who take out officers guarding the building’s exterior and gunmen who destroy their SWAT vehicle.

Exploiting the chaos outside, Tama’s men free themselves and regain control of the first five floors. He then cuts the lights and announces through the PA system that the rest of the officers are located on the sixth-floor stairwell. As an incentive, he promises permanent residency to those who eliminate them. Wahyu reveals to Jaka that his true intention for this mission was to take down Tama, who is working with corrupt police officials, including himself. This mission was not authorized by police command, making reinforcements unlikely. The remaining team members are ambushed from above and suffer heavy casualties. Rama, Bowo, Jaka, Wahyu, Dagu, Alee, Hanggi, and another officer retreat to an empty apartment but are soon trapped by more armed thugs. Using an axe, Rama creates a hole in the floor for the team to escape to a lower level.
