The Indonesian action thriller, The Raid 2 (2014), was written, directed, and edited by Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans. Following his successful takedown of his boss in the previous film, Rama’s brother seeks to help him take down Jakarta gang boss Andi. However, before they can do so, Andi is captured and executed by another criminal called Bejo. Meanwhile, Rama brings his injured squadmate Bowo and corrupt superior Lt. Wahyu to meet with Lt. Bunawar from the internal investigation unit. While Bunawar sends Bowo for treatment, he has Wahyu killed under the guise of keeping Rama safe from other corrupt officers. He then asks Rama to assist him in exposing police chief Reza’s illegal activities with the Bangun and Goto crime syndicates. Despite initial hesitation, Rama agrees once he learns of Andi’s death. Bunawar instructs Rama to go undercover in Bangun’s organization and gain the trust of his son Uco, who is currently imprisoned.
Adopting the alias Yuda, Rama purposely gets arrested and placed in the same prison as Uco. While in prison, Rama impresses Uco by saving his life during a violent riot hiding an assassination attempt. Two years later, upon Rama’s release, Uco introduces him to Bangun, who shows his gratitude by offering Rama a job. After completing some tasks for Bangun, Uco confides in Rama about feeling dissatisfied with his current role in his father’s organization and wanting to be more involved in the bigger operations. Seeing this as an opportunity, Rama secretly places a listening device in Uco’s wallet. Later, Uco meets with Bejo and learns of a plan to turn Reza and others against his own father. Bejo then proposes that they eliminate the gang members responsible for the prison riot and start a gang war between Bangun and Goto to showcase Uco’s capabilities and allow Bejo to take control of Goto’s territory.
