The Rain People (1969)
The Rain People (1969) is an American road drama film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Long Island housewife Natalie Ravenna sets off on a road trip in a family station wagon, leaving her husband at home. She visits her parents who are greatly upset with her, and later makes a collect phone call to share the news of her pregnancy with her husband. Despite his excitement, she explains that she needs some time away from him and is not yet ready to return home. Along the way, she gives a ride to Jimmy ‘Killer’ Kilgannon, a former college football star who had been paid to leave school due to a severe head injury. As they spend their first night together in Natalie’s motel room, she takes charge and has Killer show off his muscular body. While revealing that she is pregnant and initially intended for their encounter to be only one night, she ultimately sends him to his own room.
Natalie takes Killer to visit an old girlfriend of his who lives with her family. Despite the fact that the father had once promised Killer a job, the family wants nothing to do with him. Natalie then decides to take Killer with her as they continue on their journey west. Along the way, she has two near misses in finding him work and a place to stay, but ultimately decides that he would be taken advantage of in those situations. She also leaves him on the side of the road twice, only to change her mind and bring him along again. A few days later, Natalie’s husband calls her from a payphone and begs her to come back home, willing to do whatever it takes to make her happy. This causes tension between Natalie and Killer as he destroys the phone cord in anger. However, they still continue traveling together.
