The Raven (2012), a American crime thriller film directed by James McTeigue and written by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare, is based on the final days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. The poet and author finds himself aiding the police in their pursuit of a serial killer whose crimes are inspired by his stories. Though the plot is fictional, it draws from real-life events surrounding Poe’s mysterious death. Set in 19th-century Baltimore, Maryland, police uncover a slain woman in an apparently locked apartment. As they search for the killer’s escape route, they make an unsettling discovery – another body hidden within the chimney. Detective Emmett Fields, known for his expertise in solving complex cases, is called to assist and uncovers eerie similarities between this murder and one described in a short story he once read – The Murders in the Rue Morgue.
The author Edgar Allan Poe is brought in for questioning by Fields. Upon discovering the gruesome murder of Griswold, a rival of Poe’s, who has been sliced in half by a pendulum, similar to that of Poe’s story The Pit and the Pendulum, both men realize that someone is using Poe’s works as inspiration for real-life killings. As further evidence, Edgar’s beloved Emily Hamilton is taken hostage at her father’s masquerade ball, mirroring the events described in The Masque of the Red Death. The killer leaves a message for Poe, demanding he write and publish a new tale. In response to public suspicion that he is exploiting the murders for his own gain, Poe’s residence is set ablaze and he must relocate to live with Fields.
