The Real Glory (1939)
The Real Glory (1939) is an adventure film by Samuel Goldwyn Productions, released by United Artists in the weeks following Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland. Directed by Henry Hathaway and based on Charles L. Clifford’s 1937 novel of the same name, the film is set during the Moro Rebellion in the early 20th century, when the Philippines was under American occupation. The island of Mindanao is plagued by Alipang and his Muslim Moro guerrillas, who raid villages and take women and children as slaves. In an effort to protect the Filipinos without maintaining permanent garrisons, the U.S. army tries a new tactic at Fort Mysang.
A small group of officers – Colonel Hatch, Captains Manning and Hartley, and Lieutenants McCool and Larsen – are sent to train the native Philippine Constabulary to take over security. Lieutenant Canavan, an army doctor, accompanies them. Upon arrival, they are met with skepticism from Padre Rafael. Alipang, the rebel leader, begins a series of ruthless attacks on the officers. One of their own, Hatch, falls victim to these fanatical juramentados, and Manning steps up to take command. Unfortunately for him, his wife and Hartley’s daughter Linda arrive for a visit at the most inopportune moment – just in time to witness Manning’s tragic death. With Hartley now in charge, tensions rise as Canavan disagrees with Hartley’s overly cautious approach.
