The Replacements (2000)

The sports comedy film The Replacements (2000), directed by Howard Deutch, centers around a professional football league that is facing a players’ strike with only four games remaining in the season. In response, the league’s owner, Edward O’Neil, reaches out to his former coach Jimmy McGinty and asks him to return and coach the Washington Sentinels for the rest of the season. O’Neil informs McGinty that winning three out of the four remaining games will secure their spot in the playoffs. However, McGinty agrees to return on one condition – that he has full control over selecting his own players without any interference from O’Neil. With this freedom, McGinty assembles a team of varying talents, believing that they can put on an entertaining (if not winning) show for fans.
In the search for a quarterback, McGinty turns to Shane Falco, a former All-American from Ohio State whose career took a downward spiral after a tough loss at the Sugar Bowl. Now living on a houseboat in a D.C. marina, Falco earns his keep by maintaining private yachts. Initially hesitant, Falco eventually gives in to McGinty’s persuasion, as McGinty believes in his potential to reclaim his former glory on the field. The replacement players are met with hostility during their first practice, being called ‘scabs’ and pelted with eggs by the striking players; even Falco’s truck is overturned upon his arrival. Meanwhile, head cheerleader Annabelle Farrell must scramble to find new cheerleaders after the original squad apparently left in solidarity with the players. In desperation, she hires strippers when other tryouts fail.
