The Rescue (2021), a documentary, sheds light on the incredible Tham Luang cave rescue mission of 2018. This joint project was directed and produced by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. Initially, Kevin Macdonald was set to direct the documentary, but in February 2021, it was announced that Vasarhelyi and Chin would take over as directors while Macdonald remained an executive producer. National Geographic Documentary Films was on board as the production company for this film since March 2019. However, due to certain conflicts with rights to the story, the filmmakers encountered challenges. While National Geographic secured the rights to the divers’ perspectives, Netflix had already acquired the rights to tell the story of the soccer team’s experiences, preventing them from being included in the film.
In the summer of 2018, a young soccer team and their coach were saved from Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The group entered the cave on June 23rd following a practice, but heavy rain caused partial flooding and they became trapped deep inside. The rescue mission was complicated by rising water levels and strong currents, and there was no communication for nearly two weeks. As news of the situation spread globally, a massive international effort was organized to locate the group. Finally, on July 2nd, British divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton successfully found the group alive on a raised rock about 2.5 kilometers from the entrance, after navigating through narrow passages and murky waters.
