The Rider (2017)
The Rider (2017), an American contemporary western film, was written, produced, and directed by Chloé Zhao. Brady Blackburn is a renowned rodeo bronc rider who learned all about horses and riding from his late parents, Wayne and Mari Blackburn. After suffering a skull fracture from a fall during a rodeo, Brady is determined to get back on the horse – both literally and figuratively – as quickly as possible. Being a cowboy is all he knows, but deep down he realizes that going back to the rodeo may not be wise. This is confirmed by his doctor, who warns him that another serious head injury could have severe consequences.
Despite being advised otherwise, Brady checks himself out of the hospital to pursue his passion for riding again. He doesn’t want his loved ones to handle him with excessive care when it comes to the physical demands of being a man and a cowboy. Brady must accept this reality and grapple with it, despite the difficulty that comes with it. His closest pal, retired rodeo rider Lane Scott, ended up needing constant medical attention due to a similar accident and will always be living in an institution. If Brady doesn’t face this truth, he risks either harming himself physically by attempting bronc riding again, or suffering emotional pain from not being able to pursue his passion.
